Taking Human Performance Seriously In Software

The increasing significance of our systems, the increasing potential for economic, political, and human damage when they don’t work properly, and the proliferation of dependencies and associated uncertainty should give us all concern. If we look at our own system and its problems, I think you many will agree that we need to do more than acknowledge this – we need to embrace it. What does it mean, then, to take human performance seriously in software? It means we need to explore and understand how we make decisions in real situations, not imagined or abstract ones. It’s time our field leveled-up in Cognitive Systems Engineering and Resilience Engineering methods and perspectives.
